The catchment

Catchment to the East of Lancaster draining steep moors of Littledale. Solid geology Millstone Grit, mostly covered with Boulder Clay with hill peat at highest altitudes. A predominantly rural catchment draining moorland. No significant catchment changes.

The station

Velocity area station opened 1966. Considerably truncated Flat V weir from September 1975, in confined concrete channel to 1.7m, with concrete wall above as a flood barrier.

How it measures flow

All flows contained in rectangular channel. No cableway. One peak flow ratings applied to whole period of record. Currently gauged using ADCP. On rating plot, all gaugings are after weir construction, except for the batch above the rating.

Flow regime

Predominantly natural flow regime. Some minor groundwater abstractions affect the flows.

Lower confidence in pre-1970 data as exact date of flood wall construction prior to that date is unknown and back-dating of the peak flow rating prior to June 1970 therefore tentative. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7).
