What's new on FloodRadar

New things you can see or use, newest first, and a few tips on getting more out of the site. Turn on the weekly digest on your alerts page to get one of these each Friday with your area's week.

Tips

Keep your rivers in one place

Press the star on any gauge's page and it joins My Monitors: your gauges on one "Together" chart, with the rain around them and the storm overflows nearby.

Open My Monitors →

Hear when your river is high

Open a gauge's page, press the bell and choose "Alert me at typical high". Or use the Simple tab: pick your gauge, what to watch for and how you want to hear.

Set up an alert →

Watch a past storm again

Replay shows how a storm moved down the rivers hour by hour. Type a storm, a year or a river (for example Dennis or Dove) and press play.

Open Replay →

Which rivers are rising fastest

"Rising now" lists the rivers above their typical high and still climbing, ranked by how high they are, then how fast.

See rising rivers →

Add Met Office warnings to your alerts

On your alerts page, tick "Met Office weather warnings covering my postcode". You can choose any colour, amber or red, or red only, and which kinds of weather.

Open your alert settings →

The next 24 hours on one page

Forecast rain for the next day and the rivers worth watching, together.

Flood risk maps on the map

On the map, press Layers and switch on "Flood zones 2 & 3" or "Surface water risk". They are the EA's planning maps, not forecasts, and are drawn when you zoom in close.

Open the map →

Is an overflow spilling near you?

The sewage map shows the storm overflows the water companies report live. Press "Near me", or filter to "Spilling". "Not discharging" does not mean the water is clean.

Open the sewage map →

The last 24 hours, in one page

The biggest rises since yesterday, new warnings, the heaviest rain and the sewage discharges, on one page.

See the past 24 hours →

Hear about sewage spills near you

On your alerts page, tick "Sewage spills near me" to hear when an overflow near your postcode starts discharging.

Open your alert settings →

Every flood warning since 2006

Type a place, river or area to see every flood warning issued there. In Scotland the record starts later.

Search the history →

Has it flooded here before?

Search a town, village, postcode or gauge for the floods the Environment Agency has recorded (England). No record does not mean it has never flooded.

Search recorded floods →

Build an alert of your own

Combine rivers, rain and Met Office warnings in one alert, for example "either gauge above its typical high and rain still falling". "Check now" shows whether it would fire.

Build an alert →

How much rain fell last night?

Last night's rain from every reporting rain gauge in England, Scotland and Wales, updated hourly.

Mark where the water reached

If your street floods, Log a Flood records where the water reached. You choose whether to keep it private or share it on the community flood map. It does not call for help: in danger, call 999.

Log a flood →

Follow a flood wave down a river

Type a river (for example Dove, Derwent or Severn) to see a rise travel from gauge to gauge.

Open the wave tracker →

Every named storm

Search storms by name, area or season. An active storm gets a live page of its own.

See the storms →

Compare gauges side by side

Put several gauges on one chart (upstream, downstream and tributaries) to see how a rise travels between them.

Compare gauges →

What the numbers on a gauge mean

Metres above what? A short guide to the units on a river gauge, and why two gauges' numbers cannot always be compared.

Is it getting worse?

Year by year for the whole UK or your county: rain, rivers reaching rarely reached levels, flood alerts and sewage spills, with a note on what changed in how they are measured.
