How this is worked out: every rain gauge that has reported in the last two days is read for the 12 hours from 6 pm to 6 am, UK time. A gauge with at least 90% of its readings counts as a full night; rain means 0.2 mm or more, one tip of a tipping-bucket gauge. A gauge with readings missing that still recorded rain counts as rain (at least that much); one with readings missing and no rain, or none at all, is unknown, never dry. The Environment Agency's quality-checked archive gauges (about two months behind) are not counted. A gauge measures one spot, and showers can miss it. Worked out again every hour.
