💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

4 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 2.6 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 4 report not discharging.

These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Catchment Character

🌊 Fairly flashy Responds fairly quickly to rain, with moderate baseflow between events.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Curved crest weir constructed in 1957. Predominantly natural flow regime. Previously station number 72807.

More detail

The catchment

A predominantly rural catchment including western parts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Mixed geology consisting of Coal Measures, Millstone Grit and Carboniferous Limestone. Small area of impervious Silurian slate in the east. Most of the catchment is covered with Boulder Clay, some alluvium and hill peat; heather moor in the south. No significant catchment changes.

The station

Station from 1957 on rebuilt weir, curved crest 0.19m long, radius 26.6m, channel 38m wide, with V notch 2.86m wide in centre and 0.5m below main crest. Previously (Jan 1940 to May 1945) a broad-crested weir (40.2m wide), but no data presented for the earlier station. The gauging stations at Wennington and Wray account for 96% of the catchment area.

How it measures flow

Weir drowns at high flows. Defences raised in flood alleviation scheme constructed 1996 to 1997; before this, high flows cut across bend on right bank. High flow gaugings carried out by means of portable cableway 100m upstream of recorder. Two ratings applied across period of record. Peak flow ratings derived from current meter gauging with modelled top-end. New rating after embankments raised in 1997. Peak flow ratings at Hornby, Wennington and Wray have been reworked and give reasonable matches. Flood Studies Report grade B for entire record 1940-1945 and 1957-date.

Flow regime

Predominantly natural flow regime. Negligible impact on the flow from abstractions and discharges.

The flow record

Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2020 (WINFAP Files v9). No data since June 2020 due to outstation failure.
