The catchment

Narrow, linear, north-south trending catchment draining southern flank of Dartmoor Granite. Headwaters in plateau-like moorland; main river section in steep, deeply incised valley with short tributaries. Off granite, Devonian Slates widely blanketed with river gravel and alluvium. Responsive catchment. Land-use is moorland in the upper catchment and predominantly low-grade agriculture elsewhere. Catchment includes town of Ivybridge. No major catchment changes.

The station

Velocity area station with low level Flat V control. Control is approximately 9.4m wide and unchanged. Station is located a few hundred metres east of the village of Ermington.

How it measures flow

Stony river bed. Cableway present. Good station, minimal bypassing and well rated with reasonable fit to available gaugings. Recent investigations suggest backing-up when high flow coincides with high tide. Mutliple peak flow ratings accross period of record.

Flow regime

Significant flow modifications by abstractions and diversions for public water supply and sewage effluent returns from Ivybridge.
