The catchment

Drains southwards from Dartmoor Granite. Predominantly Lower Old Red Sandstone in lower reaches, Culm Measures between. Alluvium in valley bottom. Land-use: rural, grazing and woodland in steeply incised valley. No major catchment changes.

The station

Velocity area station built in 1971. Natural control until Flat V weir built in 2012/13.

How it measures flow

Cableway present, span 25.5m. Minimal bypassing. Pre-weir low flows were affected by weed growth and movement of the natural bed control (downstream of station) causing frequent re-rating. Reasonable fit to available gaugings.

Flow regime

Some regulation from surface water and groundwater abstractions. Avon Dam in the catchment (small reservoir in the headwaters) can affect runoff. Dam fills quickly and overspills during significant events, but would make no difference to the flow at Loddiswell. Hydro-electric power scheme was installed at the Dam (in 2012), on the falling limb of events, flows can suddenly drop when the reservoir stops releasing.
