💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

59 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 190 m away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 56 report not discharging, and for 3 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

13 other overflows within 6 km are downstream of this gauge or on another branch of the river network, so they are not listed.

These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Catchment Character

🌊 Mixed response A balance of quick runoff and slower groundwater baseflow.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Non-standard compound Crump weir gauging responsive catchment. Ullswater has a significant effect on Eamont flows.

More detail

The catchment

Large catchment with mixed geology. Horseshoe shaped outcrop of Carboniferous Limestone forms south and east watersheds in Pennines; lakes drain Ordovician Borrowdale volcanics. Main Vale of Eden is Boulder Clay overlying Sherwood sandstone. Land-use variable; moorland to arable with little urbanisation. No significant catchment changes.

The station

Non-standard compound Crump weir. Was designed as a multifunctional station to also allow and count fish migration, and has 1:2 upstream slope, 1:7.3 downstream slope. Side sections approx 14.5m wide, central low flow section 1.458m wide with crest 0.5m below side weirs. Opened December 1996 to replace Warwick Bridge (76002).

How it measures flow

Until 1999, surging was a serious problem at this site, especially when gauging high flows. Baffles fitted and surging was reduced. Two peak flow rating applied across period of record, the most recent following storm Desmond. Rating for low and medium flows derived from gaugings, high flows from hydraulic modelling.

Flow regime

Responsive catchment, with flows influenced by Ullswater and Haweswater and Wet Sleddale reservoirs, and abstractions.

The flow record

December 2010 daily flows may have been affected by freezing conditions. Period of overlap with Warwick Bridge shows good correlation at high flows. Surge was noted in the well between April 1997 and July 2002 and data marked as rejected. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11). Statistical analysis does not support merging of the flow records of 76002 with 76017.
