Non-standard timber weir gauging a rural, natural catchment.

The catchment

Rural catchment. Roe Beck drains upland hills in south west, joined by the flatter River Iver draining the south east. Bedrock is a mixture of mudstone, sandstone and limestone, with extensive cover of boulder clay. No catchment changes known.

The station

A non-standard V weir constructed from timber in March 1999, 12m across, anchored to the sandstone bed.

How it measures flow

The control is quite insensitive for lower flows and drowns at around 0.34m, but is good for medium to high flows. Pressure transducer used. High flows are controlled by the bridge downstream. Station hut floods in extreme events but still records. During the very highest flows there has been limited spill around the bridge. Rating developed from gaugings, with modelled top-end. Stable rating history.

Responsive catchment. No artificial influences known.
