Exceptional summer rainfall in June and July caused widespread inland river and surface-water flooding across Yorkshire, the Midlands and the Severn/Thames catchments. Hull saw over 6,500 homes flooded, the Don overwhelmed Sheffield, and the Mythe works failure left around 420,000 without mains water; 13 died.
