The catchment

Mostly moderately permeable. Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grit series down to Knaresborough, where Carboniferous Goredale rocks form an inlier. Magnesian Limestone lies on top of the Grits, dipping east, followed by general drift cover below Knaresborough. Just under half of the catchment is overlain by superficial deposits. Predominantly rural; half grassland with moorland headwaters and arable in lower valley which is flat and the river meandering. No known catchment changes.

The station

Broad-crested masonry mill weir (49.8m wide) placed diagonally across the river, with a cableway d/s at Cowthorpe. Station intended to be replaced by full-range ultrasonic gauge at Skip Bridge (27062) but remains open due to the value of the long record.

How it measures flow

Insensitive weir due to width. Broad crest prone to collecting debris. Weir drowns in the mid-range, and is by-passed at the highest levels (beginning at 2.41m). Cableway 1km downstream at Cowthorpe, also by-passed and drowned in extreme flows. Multiple peak flow ratings apply across period of record, different lower limbs have been used for periods when opening of by-pass sluice gate affected flows. Hydraulic modelling gives more confidence to post October 1966 ratings, but caution is advised. Level measurement by shaft encoder and bubbler. Flood Studies Report grade A2.

Flow regime

Opening and closing of mill race sluices has occurred but was unlikely to have affected high flows. Regulatory effect of headwater reservoirs (Angram, Scar House and Gouthwaite) is evident at low flows. Gouthwaite controls 24% of the catchment and has a significant impact in low flow periods. Mill operation evident in the early record. Overall net export of water.

The flow record

Flows in pre-digital period cannot be reprocessed and therefore peak flows are marked as rejected. Operation of by-pass sluice in the 1980s caused difficulties; flows subsequently revised. No data for June 1984 - March 1985 due to site works. Flows from 1966 onwards have all been re-processed with revised ratings, earlier peaks (notably 1946, 1965) still rely on old ratings and likely to be overestimated. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2020 (WINFAP Files v9).
