The catchment

Very flat catchment draining Weald Moors. Headwaters dominated by argillaceous Carboniferous rocks. Lower reaches mostly Permian Sandstone overlain by mixed superficial deposits. Urban areas include Newport and the northern part of Telford.

Electromagnetic gauge, using a bubbler device for level measurement, in trapezoidal channel.

How it measures flow

Very low velocities experienced. Replaced poor weed-affected open channel site in 1981.
