The catchment
Geology: Lower Old Red Sandstone, marl dominated producing subdued relief (Herefordshire Plain). Fluvio-glacial deposits near main channel worked for sand and gravel production.
The station
Velocity area station with cableway (27.5m between stanchions). Width at bankfull is 16m. Flows over right bank at 2.50m onto wide floodplain with considerable storage. Station for flood warning purposes only from Jul 1982 to Dec 1989. Reinstated as flow monitoring station from Jan 1990. Removed from peak flows dataset in April 2017 (WINFAP Files v5).
How it measures flow
Cableway rated with unstable gravel bed. Recent peaks truncated at 32.1 cumecs - rating limit (overbank flows spill onto wide floodplain). Excessive weed growth in summer months requires regular clearance and gravel movement is also an issue requiring maintenance - anecdotal evidence indicates this could be an issue at low flows.
The flow record
No records pre-1953. Peaks unreliable 1953-1965. Following a rating review in 2013 flows for the period 01/03/1981 onwards have been reprocessed - note this results in a significant drop in flows during the 1995 drought. Following a rating review in 2023 flows for the period 06/03/2014 onwards have been reprocessed.
