The catchment
Very flat catchment, heavily urbanised although the bottom end is rural. Solid geology is Keuper Marl (70%) and sandstone (30%); south western portion Boulder Clay covered. Soils fine red loams or clays.
The station
Compound Crump profile weir, crest lengths 2.13m and 5.48m (total). Contained to wing wall height (2.0m). Weir much wider than u/s channel.
How it measures flow
Big siltation problem, crest tapping usually blocked. Revised data from start of record (1/1976) to 12/2008 loaded in 03/2010: new data are lower at high flows and slightly higher at low flows; previous max GDF on 6/8/81 reduced from 12.2 to 8.7 m3s-1.
Flow regime
Responsive regime. Storm waters from Wythenshaw, Sale and the M56 are directed to the Mersey.
