The catchment

Mainly Upper Chalk with some London Clay in S, overlain by superficial deposits (predominantly Boulder Clay). Mainly rural, predominantly arable land, some built-up areas.

The station

Flat V weir with low flow sharp-crested rectangular notch.

How it measures flow

No spillway. Flood banks contain approx. 35 cumecs. Reasonable fit to gaugings up to bank full. Breaching u/s may cause bypassing. Gaugings for this station are float runs, and less accurate than standard methods. One rating applied across period of record.

Flow regime

Ely/Ouse Transfer Scheme adjustments already made. Runoff reduced by public water supply (predominantly for Haverhill), industrial and agricultural abstraction from surface water and gw. Runoff increased by effluent returns. Flow affected by Ely/Ouse Transfer Scheme.

AMAX data have been corrected, but in some cases can be below the daily flow as these are not corrected. Naturalised flows 1972-1976, since then adjustments needed for abstractions, discharges and PWS predominantly for Haverhill. First year of record rejected due to partial data. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11).
