The catchment

River rises from springs on Cotswolds scarp; steep headwaters. Drift free, mostly Liassic argillaceous rocks. Agriculture and horticulture dominate.

The station

Original trapezoidal flume (1968-95) replaced in 1995 (poor state of repair and weed growth problems affecting low flows). New weir is a flat V Crump profile (1:10) weir in straightened cut 5m wide, with wing walls at 0.7m and has cableway. Fish baffles added to weir in June 2018.

How it measures flow

Cableway rated with flood banks containing all but the highest flows but inundation occurs u/s. Flat V weir drowns at medium levels but rating fits gaugings well below 2m stage. Constriction upstream will increase approach velocity. Original trapezoidal flume rating supported by c/m gaugings but poor state of repair and weed growth problems affecting low flows. Two ratings applied across period of record, the most recent is valid from July 1995 when flume replaced.

Flow regime

PWS from headwater springs; river abstractions for horticulture. Sewage works short way upstream. Net result moderate, significant at low flows.

The flow record

Station closed between Dec 1994 and July 1995. Flows in June 2018 affected by fish baffle construction on weir. April 1998 flood at 3.14m, estimated as 100 cumecs, well above rating limit so considerable uncertainty in this magnitude. July 2007 flood 0.5m above April 1998. Such flows are outside design range of site and degree of rating extrapolation means peak flows are considered inaccurate. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11).
