💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

7 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 190 m away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 7 report not discharging.

Catchment Character

🌊 Fairly flashy Responds fairly quickly to rain, with moderate baseflow between events.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Crump profile weir (with fish baffles installed Oct 2012) in an incised trapezoidal channel with cableway, until 2014, now roped or RC boat for high flows. Used as a tributary index gauge in flood forecasting system.

More detail

The catchment

Steep headwaters; rises from springs from the Cotswold Oolites; Drift free, most of the catchment drains Lias clays. Agriculture and horticulture dominate.

The station

Crump profile weir, 4.5m wide by 0.5m deep, in an incised trapezoidal channel. Low cost fish baffles installed in Oct 2012. Cableway for high flows until 2014. High flows (to bankfull, and possibly above) are now gauged by rope or radio controlled boat. Commonly exceeds bankfull and does bypass some of the gauging section. Insensitive at low flows. EA use site as a tributary index gauge in flood forecasting system.

How it measures flow

Cableway until 2014 for high flows, by rope or remote control boat after. Commonly exceeds bankfull and does bypass some of the gauging section. Insensitive at low flows. One peak flow rating across period of record based on check gaugings and extrapolation above.

Flow regime

PWS from headwater springs; spray irrigation and WRW effluent have dominant effect on the lowest flows. The Isbourne is spring-fed but flashy response to storms.

The flow record

Station submerged and rating exceeded during July 2007 high flow event. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2019 (WINFAP Files v8).
