Flood Zones, Warning Areas and Surface Water are Environment Agency maps and cover England only. Alness is in Scotland, so they draw little or nothing here — that is where the map ends, not an absence of flood risk. SEPA’s warning areas have their own pages under flood areas.

The watercourse nearest Alness

The nearest watercourse on the river map is the River Averon (Alness River), about 10 m from the middle of Alness's gauges. It flows on to the sea.

A gauge downstream shows water that has already passed this point; one upstream sees it first. Distances along the river are from the point on the River Averon (Alness River) nearest the middle of Alness's gauges. From Ordnance Survey’s river map (OS Open Rivers), which leaves out small streams, ditches and culverts, so a nearer one may exist. This describes where water goes on the map; it says nothing about flooding at any address. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights 2026.

Environment Agency Flood Warning Areas

No Environment Agency flood warning area is mapped within 10km of Alness. That means the EA has not defined a warning target area here, which is not evidence the town cannot flood: warning areas exist where the EA runs a warning service, and surface-water and groundwater flooding have no warning areas at all. The EA’s register covers England only — Alness is in Scotland, where the warning service is SEPA’s, and FloodRadar publishes its areas alongside the EA’s on the flood areas index.

There are 5 storm overflows within 5km of Alness. None of the 4 with a reporting monitor are currently discharging (1 has no live status right now). Enable "Sewage" on the map above to see their locations.

Recorded floods near Alness

No recorded flood outline within ~5 km of the Alness town centre means no flood was mapped here, which is not evidence none happened: the Environment Agency mapped only some floods, mapping effort rose sharply after about 2000, and surface-water flooding is largely absent from this record. The Environment Agency's Recorded Flood Outlines cover England only, and Alness is in Scotland — so an empty record here is an absence of coverage, not an absence of floods.
