The catchment

Geology is predominantly Chalk with Upper Greensand and Gault in higher parts of catchment. The upper Greensand outcrops in the higher parts of the catchment around Kilmington and further downstream between Norton Bavant and Warminster there is a large outcrop of Upper Greensand associated with an anticlinal structure trending east/west. To the south of this outcrop there is an appreciable Chalk outcrop consisting mainly of Middle and Lower Chalk with limited outcrops of Upper Chalk. Land use is rural. No major catchment changes.

The station

Crump profile weir, crest 6.09m broad. Full range station, theoretically rated. Station closed on 18/07/2024 due to modification of weir structure to aid fish passage, and is being replaced by an ultrasonic gauge in a similar location.

How it measures flow

Out-of-bank flow may occur just upstream before bankfull at gauging station. Bypassing occurs during very extreme events but is not a major issue. One theoretical rating applied. Upper limit of rating is 0.41m, it is extrapolated beyond that limit.

Some augmentation of flow. Substantial upstream groundwater abstractions and hatcheries affect flow.
