About this gauge

One of the main gauging stations in the Upper Wey Catchment that measures flow from the South and North Wey tributaries.

The catchment

A predominantly pervious catchment (Chalk and Upper Greensand). Mainly rural with substantial mixed woodland in the headwaters while arable agriculture predominates in the western part of the catchment. Topographical catchment exceeds the gw catchment.

The station

Crump weir (crest: 12m wide) replaced an informal broad-crested structure in 1972 that was incapable of precise flow measurement.

How it measures flow

A tail recorder was installed in May 2013. The weir was originally constructed with a pressure tapping, but this is almost permanently blocked by silt. The weir is bypassed during peak flows. One peak flow rating applied across period of record incorporating the effects of drowning. Gauged rating replaced Crump calibration in March 1997.

Flow regime

Runoff influenced by groundwater abstraction/recharge. Flows increased by effluent returns. Small net export of water. Substantial baseflow but very responsive to storm events.
