Velocity area station used primarily for water quality purposes - replaces 28005, Elford which was several km upstream. Very broad flood plain on both banks.

The catchment

Catchment predominantly Mercia Mudstones with some shales and limestones. Overlain by Boulder Clay in the headwater with sands and gravels within the valleys. Mixed farming and urbanised catchment.

The station

Velocity area station immediately downstream of Hopwas road bridge between training banks that contain the majority of high flows. Station used primarily for water quality purposes. Some bypassing, but accounted for in rating. Site replaces 28005, Elford which was several km upstream. Very broad flood plain on both banks.

How it measures flow

Suffers from heavy weed growth which contributes to over-estimation of runoff requiring retrospective rating adjustments (not shown) - but all are based on the winter curve applied here as the majority of floods are in winter and flatten weeds. As a result of these weeds there is significant scatter in gaugings. Ratings revised in 2016. Three peak flow ratings across period of record. Gaugings carried out using remote controlled ADCP within the measurement section and adjacent floodplain area on the left bank.

The flow record

Magnitude of June and July 2007 flood events subject to considerable overestimation due to hydraulic conditions and increased channel and floodplain rugosity. Gaugings taken during events suggest peak flows of around 210 cumecs in June and 200 cumecs in July 2007. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7) and in August 2024 (WINFAP Files v13).
