The catchment
The River Churnet originates approximately 30km North of Quixhill gauging station on the Middle Hills (7km North East of Leek, Staffordshire). The river flows in a south-westerly direction where it flows into Tittesworth Reservoir. The River Churnet then continues in a southerly direction through Staffordshire.
The station
Station was built in 1998 and is located on the late Joseph Cyril Bamford Estate (JCB) near the village of Rocester.
How it measures flow
A Flat V triangular profile weir with vertical side walls provides a hydraulic control to measure discharge. Cableway no longer in use - remote controlled ADCP gaugings carried out. During out of bank flows in extreme flood events, alternative locations further upstream have to be used as the adjacent floodplain area is not measurable and the main river section unreachable.
Flow regime
The Churnet is generally baseflow dominated and can rise quite rapidly following heavy rainfall, owing to the upland nature of the catchment. It is a very silty river often with high sediment load except at the lowest of flows.
