You'll be notified when this gauge is rising more than 0.10 m/hr — a sign of rapidly increasing water levels.
Beta. You'll be notified when a flood wave detected at an upstream gauge is forecast to reach this station, with an estimated arrival time. Accuracy improves as we verify more waves.
You'll be notified when a new storm-overflow (sewage) discharge starts within ~3 km of this gauge, based on the water companies' near-real-time feeds.

River Flow
90 days
Daily mean discharge (m³/s) with the daily min–max band, from the EA Hydrology API. Flow is the volume of water passing the gauge — often a more direct flood signal than level.

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.
255 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 2.3 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 242 report not discharging, and for 13 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

58 other overflows within 6 km are downstream of this gauge or on another branch of the river network, so they are not listed.
These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Flood history near this gauge
Official Environment Agency warnings issued since 2007 for the 11 flood
areas linked to this gauge (nearest 1.8 km away).
Warnings apply to a whole flood area, not necessarily this exact spot. Years before 2006 aren't covered by the EA's historic record.

🌊 Mixed responseA balance of quick runoff and slower groundwater baseflow.
Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how
steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay
catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is
slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right
from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

Large crump Weir 200m south of Iwood farm. Extensive out of bank flow.
More detail
The catchment
River rises from western slopes of the Mendips. Catchment geology comprises carboniferous limestone, Keuper Marl and estuarine alluvium. Land use is predominantly rural with some small settlements. No major changes to catchment.
The station
Station located 200m south of Iwood Farm and was opened in 1966 as a rated section. Between 08/1971 and 03/1973 a Crump weir was installed, crest 5m broad. Flood warning station for Congresbury approx. 1km downstream.
How it measures flow
Bankfull 1.3m, with bypassing at high flows and extensive out of bank flow on surrounding pasture during large events. Bypasses at high flows. Peak flow rating revised 2015. Theoretical rating extended beyond bankfull using modelled data. More gaugings needed to verify the rating curve for the middle and high flow ranges. In 2007, a bed mounted ADCP has been installed to improve resilience. In the summer of 2013, low cost fish passage baffles were installed on the front face of the weir and a vertical eel pass has been installed on the right bank wing wall. Hydropower added which has affected gauging. Out of bank modelling been done. One peak flow rating across period of record.
Flow regime
Runoff reduced by public water supply abstraction. Blagdon reservoir (approx. 2 sq.km) situated in headwaters.
The flow record
Station closed 02/1975 to 08/1985; reopened with telemetry facilities. Very patchy record before 1975. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7) and in August 2025 (WINFAP Files v14).
Timing, not cause. Gauges can move together simply because the same rain fell on both.
Frequently asked questions
Is the River Avon at Keynsham, Rivermead flooding today?
The current level is 4.70m, which is below the typical range. Flooding is very unlikely at this level.
Is the river level rising or falling at Keynsham, Rivermead?
Based on the most recent readings, the level is currently steady. The chart above shows the last 12 hours of measurements by default (up to 7 days), updated roughly every 15 minutes.
What is a normal level for the River Avon at Keynsham, Rivermead?
The typical range at this station is 4.96m to 5.86m, based on Environment Agency historical data. Levels above 5.86m are higher than usually seen and may indicate a flood risk.
