💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

9 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 2.2 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 9 report not discharging.

Catchment Character

🌊 Fairly flashy Responds fairly quickly to rain, with moderate baseflow between events.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Crump profile weir for low flows with velocity area section for higher flows further downstream. Site subject to vandalism.

More detail

The catchment

Very responsive, impermeable catchment, predominantly comprising of Lower Lias clays. Land use is rural. No major catchment changes.

The station

Crump profile weir for low flows, crest 6.71m broad, located approximately 300m upstream of Ashford Mill House. Velocity area station for higher flows downstream. Site subject to vandalism.

How it measures flow

Modular limit of 0.6m. Downstream weed growth affects the stability of the stage-discharge relationship. Bypassing of station at high flows; extensive floodplain storage occurs next to the station before bankfull reached. Rating reviewed by EA in 2016. Peak flow rating curve is a combination of theoretical for weir and best-fit curve for medium and high flows. Scatter in gaugings at high flows although general shape of rating confirmed. Modelled top segment for out of bank flows.

Flow regime

Flows influenced by minor groundwater abstraction, but augmented by effluent returns; evidence of mill/factory discharges on charts.

The flow record

Peak flows between 1989 and 1991 are marked as rejected pending a rating review. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2020 (WINFAP Files v9).
