The catchment
Catchment mainly comprises Oolitic Limestone, with left bank tributaries draining off clays. Generally rapid to peak but slow recession. The upper catchment is dominated by the limestone of the Cotswold Hills. Land use is predominantly rural. No major catchment changes.
The station
Station located near the village of Great Somerford, 4km south east of Malmesbury and was opened in 1963 as one of the first Compound Crump weirs in Britain. Compound Crump profile weir having low flow crest between two flanking sections. Situated 90m downstream of Great Somerford road bridge.
How it measures flow
Full range station, all except extreme flows (e.g. 07/1968 drowned the structure) contained. Flows go out of bank upstream before bankfull at the structure. Full review carried out in 03/1998 to try to explain discrepancy between original rating & recent low flow gaugings. Still some uncertainty whether the adopted rating is the most appropriate. 5 year review carried out in 2010 but no changes were made. Further review carried out in 2015-16 and lowest section of the rating was updated to use a more recent coefficient of discharge. One peak flow rating across period of record. Modelling being done to asses bypassing and new routine for gauging now in place.
