💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

19 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 360 m away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 15 report not discharging, and for 4 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

2 other overflows within 6 km are downstream of this gauge or on another branch of the river network, so they are not listed.

These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Catchment Character

🌊 Mixed response A balance of quick runoff and slower groundwater baseflow.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Velocity area station with gravel control well gauged to and rarely exceeding bankfull.

More detail

The catchment

Left bank characterised by high relief hills and broad valleys. Steep and narrow on right bank. Geology: mainly Palaeozoic sediments with Pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks of the Longmynd. Relatively Drift free; some valley gravel and Boulder Clay in the lower reaches. Landuse mainly forestry and grazing.

The station

Velocity area station with gravel control. Well gauged to bankfull - open channel site with cableway. Straight wide channel, susceptible to bed movement. U/s shoaling may render low flow rating variable from year to year. Rarely out of bank. Installation of Flat V at d/s 54029 has largely eliminated apparent inconsistency between the two flow series.

How it measures flow

Well gauged to bankfull - open channel site with cableway. Straight wide channel, susceptible to bed movement. U/s shoaling may render low flow rating variable from year to year. Rarely out of bank. Some scatter in gaugings, but reasonable fit to bank full. Two peak flow ratings across period of record.

Flow regime

Negligible abstraction and effluent flows -natural flow regime.

The flow record

Due to gravel shift during 2007 flood, flows post 23/07/2007 reprocessed using updated rating. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11).
