The catchment

Predominantly natural upland catchment on Lower Carboniferous Limestone and Shales. Some Boulder Clay cover and peat in headwaters. Rural catchment, predominantly moorland and pasture.

The station

Open channel section in deep valley with natural gravel control. Ultrasonic supported by rating curve. Station added to peak flows dataset in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7).

How it measures flow

Ultrasonic gauge for daily flows but lowest flows (below 1 cumec) are below the range of the gauge and are infilled from the rating. Gauge frequently drops out due to aeration / turbulence at high flows so high flow record is taken from the rating curve. Gauged to within 40% of AMAX1 but flows are well contained with no bypassing. Gravel control has shifted previously, two ratings apply since start of record to account for this change. Regular gauging required to monitor future control changes.
