Crump weir installed 1973 with ultrasonics since 2001. Replaces 27015. Poor flow correlation between the two sites.

The catchment

Mixed geology. Limestones and sandstones bordering the Vale of Pickering; Oxford Clay, shale and sandstone to the north, and sands, clay and gravels in the Vale of Pickering. Rural catchment - moorland and forestry dominate in northern headwaters which drain North York Moors. Arable significant in south. No known catchment changes.

The station

Crump weir (20m wide) installed September 1973. Station replaces 27015 which had poor quality data. Crump weir supplemented by in-line path ultrasonic gauge for high flow measurement from 9-11-2001. Peak flows from the headwaters are diverted down the Sea Cut (27033). All data for this site is held against this station number. Larinier fish pass built adjacent to weir in 2013 and hydro-electric turbine installed in 2017. Crossed-path multi-path ultrasonic gauge installed 70m upstream of the weir in 2011, this replaces measurement at the weir from 2013.

How it measures flow

Crump weir formula accounts for non-modular flow at approx 55 cumecs (1.2m). This was verified using gaugings and ultrasonic flow data. The weir drowns at approximately 1.2m, and is overtopped on the left bank above 1.9m - this may lead to an under-estimation of flows. However, this is small and extrapolation is appropriate. A bund upstream ensures floodplain storage returns through section but flows over 1.9m bypass along a vehicle track and return downstream of the station. The bypassing was estimated to be around 50-60 cumecs in 2000. Peak flow rating derived from gaugings, including two from November 2012 which also included measure of bypass flow and confirm rating extrapolation is good. Single path ultrasonic gauge replaced by crossed-path multi-path gauge in 2011, which measures flows up to 1.9m, but some bypassing occurs above this.

Flow regime

Catchment shows a slow hydrological response and includes a groundwater component with considerable flood plain storage. Peak flows from the headwaters u/s of Forge Valley (approximately 6.5% of the catchment) are diverted down the Sea Cut (27033). Minor net impact of artificial influences (spray irrigation is appreciable).

The flow record

Pre-October 1973 data (monthly only) of poorer quality; derives from 27015. Overlap between data at 27041 and 27015 is limited and the flow correlation disappointing. Structure drowned and bypassed in March 1999 & Nov 2000 floods but rating extrapolation does allow for this. Gap in ultrasonics record 4/11/2002 to 30/09/2003. Ultrasonic gauge replaces rated flows from May 2013. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7).
