The catchment

Chalk with large Boulder Clay cover. Rural catchment, arable with some forest and grassland, several small towns.

The station

Crump profile weir, 6m broad. Prior to Oct 1979, broad-crested weir (crest: 7.4m), situated under double-arch bridge.

How it measures flow

Two peak flow ratings applied across period of record, the most recent is valid from October-1979. Current rating only reliable to bankfull. Dredging increased modular limit. Theoretical rating for original weir confirmed by c/m measurements. Part of the Thet-Little Ouse groundwater support scheme, which triggers at 350 l/s to maintain flow. These trigger flows apply when the scheme is being used as a river support scheme for water users (not for Ely Ouse to Essex Transfer Scheme). The amount pumped in any one season is initially limited to 3 per cent of the annual licenced quantity of the Thet-Little Ouse scheme.
