💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

28 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 2.9 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 27 report not discharging, and for 1 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

Catchment Character

🌊 Fairly flashy Responds fairly quickly to rain, with moderate baseflow between events.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Ultrasonic gauge on the Wreake.

More detail

The catchment

Moderate relief catchment, draining west from the Oolitic Limestone scarp. Predominantly Boulder Clay overlying Liassic clays. Rural catchment, mixed farming, containing Melton Mowbray.

The station

Ultrasonic time of flight gauge since October 2018, providing good quality data at low and high flows. Side-looking ADCP gauge 2012-2018. Electromagnetic gauge in use 1982-2012, replacing the original crump weir 4.6m wide which was originally installed in 1967.

How it measures flow

All flows contained. Site difficult to gauge; very low velocities at low flows and station bypassed at high flows. Three peak flow ratings applied across period of record.

Flow regime

Fast response to rainfall and significant augmentation from WRW.

The flow record

Issues with low flow data during ADCP period due to low channel velocities in a deep river section. Levels indicate the March 1975 event may have been higher than the April 1998 event, but the magnitude cannot be verified due to complications with the rating history.
