The catchment
The east and west branches of the River Stour flow over impermeable (mainly) Weald Clay; below Ashford (the only major settlement). Catchment is half-and-half impervious and pervious. A rural catchment with mixed land use.
The station
Triangular crump weir (width 7.61m) - drowns at <3 cumecs (no flow adjustment). Velocity area station (just downstream) for high flows. The River Stour is wide & shallow at the gauging station, the floodplain is limited by the railway line. Previously a broad crested weir (1960-62) which was subject to premature drowning frequently due to weed growth and the low design of the weir sill.
How it measures flow
The weir conforms to British Standards up to 0.3m stage. Wye Bridge contains 5 arches with secondary arches between the river & railway line to accommodate very high flows. Bank is overtopped at 1.65m stage, flow contained in floodplain to 1.85m stage. Inspection of the gauge in 2002 for a rating review suggests a secondary flow path upstream of Wye Bridge possibly results in flow through the secondary culverts, bypassing the gauge. Weed growth can cause overestimation of flows. Siltation also an issue. In 1962, sill was raised and the downstream section was dredged approx. 23cm. It was proposed to clear the weed annually to prevent further drowning, however conservation concerns have halted this in recent years. Peak flow rating beyond 0.8m derived from hydraulic modelling, confirmed with gaugings to 1.6m.
Flow regime
M20 motorway & Channel Tunnel rail link are increasing the development pressures on the catchment. Effluent from Ashford is a significant component of low flows; small net import of water. Flood retention reservoirs above Ashford (constructed 1990-2). Hydrographs show evidence of upstream mill sluice operation (declining); regulation in early records from Wye Mill 160m upstream. The catchment exhibits little storage.
