💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

11 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 2.0 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 8 report not discharging, and for 3 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

Catchment Character

🌊 Urban & flashy Heavily built-up — rain runs off hard surfaces fast, so levels can spike within hours of heavy rain.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

The station is located in North-West London on the River Brent, below Wealdstone Brook confluence and the Brent Reservoir.

More detail

The catchment

A largely urban/suburban catchment in North-West London.

The station

Critical depth flume (rectangular) in a concrete channel, d/s of Brent Reservoir (informally called the Welsh Harp Reservoir).

How it measures flow

One rating applied across period of record. The weir is insensitive at low flows. There are discrepancies between the rating and low flow gaugings. However at stages higher than 0.25m the rating is much more reliable. Downstream debris screen (approx. 700m) can cause a backwater effect at the weir resulting in non-modular conditions and overestimation of flow. The extent of the effect is not fully known but has been witnessed during larger events. Screen is maintained by Environment Agency field team but not on a regular basis.

Flow regime

Responsive regime with very artificial low flow pattern. Welsh Harp reservoir is upstream. The Canal and River Trust can take a maximum of 1.7 Ml/d from the Welsh Harp reservoir to feed the Grand Union Canal. Run-off from the North Circular road enters the river approximately 1.5km upstream of the station.

The flow record

Peak flow data before water-year 1978/1979 has not been re-calculated using rating New1 as there is no stage data available. These events are calculated through the old rating. New rating gave minimal change to flow magnitude across the flow range so flows pre-1978 are still usable. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in August 2024 (WINFAP Files v13).
