💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

1 storm overflow is traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 14.6 km away along the river. 0 report discharging now, 1 reports not discharging.

These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Catchment Character

🌊 Urban & flashy Heavily built-up — rain runs off hard surfaces fast, so levels can spike within hours of heavy rain.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

A critical depth flume. Very responsive regime.

More detail

The catchment

The catchment is a mixture of urban and suburban development.

The station

A critical depth flume (width: 4m, wing wall height: 2m) in a concrete channel. Removed from peak flows dataset in February 2018 (WINFAP Files v6). Station closed.

How it measures flow

The flume was constructed in 1961 and calibrated theoretically - the low flow rating has since been revised on the basis of c/m gauging results; more gauging required to confirm the high flow rating). Modular range uncertain. One peak flow rating applied across period of record. Current rating derived by hydraulic modelling. Good fit to gaugings although none at high flows. More current meter readings needed from 0.4m to bankfull at 2m.

Flow regime

Very responsive regime.

The flow record

The structure was overwhelmed by the 1968 flood but sensibly full range otherwise. The September 1968 flood estimated at about 15 cumecs - bypassed the station, and exceeded the range of the recorder. Until June 1978, flows read from chart (rather than stage) - stages derived from rating applied, or GLC data where available.
