The catchment

Moderate relief catchment, significantly urbanised at Biddulph and Stoke on Trent, draining the Coal Measures; approximately quarter of catchment is covered with Boulder Clay.

The station

Crump profile weir, 4.12m wide, modular throughout range. Liable to collect rubbish and fish baffles added in 2012.

How it measures flow

Four peak flow ratings applied across period of record. Current meter gaugings show a high degree of accuracy compared to rating. Low flow ADCP gaugings typically carried out between weir wing walls. High flow gaugings performed off or near upstream footbridge.

Flow regime

A responsive catchment affected by impounding reservoirs, discharges from three WRW's, plus mine drainage. Substantial flow modification in the early record, but reduced to significant through the 1980s. Flow affected by STW closure: effluent from Stoke diverted to other STW downstream of the gauge.
