The catchment

Permeable (Chalk) catchment draining northern side of Yorkshire Wolds. Predominantly (more than three quarters) arable and some pasture land use. Topographical and groundwater divides not coincident.

The station

Flat-V weir. Replaced the downstream gauge 26004 (Bridlington).

Flow regime

Baseflow dominated regime; the Gypsey Race ceases to flow during prolonged droughts. Some groundwater abstractions. Flow recorded in Gypsey Race is not representative of the topographic catchment area but of the lower reaches of an ephemeral stream where the groundwater body discharges to the surface. Groundwater recharge also passes to adjacent catchments to the south.
