The catchment

Predominantly Upper Greensand and Lower Chalk. Small amount of river gravel and alluvium in valley bottom. The remaining geology consists of Upper and Middle Chalk, Clay and some Gault. Upper Chalk and Clay form the northern and extreme southern borders of the catchment. Rural land use. No major catchment changes.

The station

Crump profile weir, crest 4.57m wide constructed just u/s of the confluence of the East and West Avon just north of Upavon. Station adjacent to East Avon at Upavon (43014); the two weirs gauge the two branches of the Avon immediately upstream of their confluence at Upavon.

How it measures flow

Full range station, no drowning but susceptible to algal growth problems. Suspicion of small errors within the stilling well caused by increased buoyancy of the counter weight when submerged - may cause small errors in stage measurement in the order of a few millimeters only. Theoretical, original rating; few high flow spot gaugings to confirm. Upper limit of rating is 0.40m/2.46cumecs. It is extrapolated beyond that limit.

Flow regime

Minor groundwater abstractions in catchment. Frequent hatch activity throughout the flow range with potential for exaggerated or false peaks.

High flow on 18/01/2011 - level of 0.586m, modularity was observed at 83.5%. A hydraulic jump was still present and there was no by-passing. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2020 (WINFAP Files v9).
