The catchment

Predominantly impermeable (clay) catchment but with outcrops of more permeable substrates. Oxford and Cambridge Clays upstream, Chalk downstream. Rural land use. No major catchment changes.

The station

Compound Crump profile weir with low flow crest 6.1m wide, total breadth 18.3m. Structure situated under road bridge.

How it measures flow

Station drowns early. Water meadow system operates - area floods during high discharges and becomes inaccessible. Modular limit is unknown and probably seasonally variable. Severe weed growth. Non-modularity observed at stage around 0.7m (~Q13). Station regularly bypassed at approximately 2.3-2.6m (>Q2). Rating takes account for both of these situations. In-channel gaugings are carried out at the site but out of bank gaugings are taken at Stourpaine Bridge. Two peak flow ratings applied across period of record. Pre-1992 rating is theoretical for weir up to 0.975m then fitted to gaugings. Post-1992 rating is produced using dimensional surveys of weir up to 0.717m, fitted to gaugings to 3.066m then modelled above.

Flow regime

Substantial ground & surface water abstractions within catchment affect flow, including abstraction for public water supply. Two water mills upstream may produce hydrograph perturbations, particularly when mean flows are less than 300cumecs (e.g. 11/1978).
