💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

None of the storm overflows FloodRadar holds is traced upstream of this gauge on the mapped river network. That is not the same as none: the map leaves out many small streams and culverts, so an overflow it cannot place may still drain here, and not every company publishes every overflow. Those nearby are listed below.

Catchment Character

🌊 Mixed response A balance of quick runoff and slower groundwater baseflow.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Velocity area station with Flat V (truncated) triangular profile weir operational from 2007. Flow regime influenced by a few abstractions upstream.

More detail

The catchment

The catchment area is characterized as natural with no urbanisation, and no flood attenuation structures. The catchment is underlain by permeable sandstones, slates and shales. Catchment soils are well-drained fine loamy or fine silty soils over rock, with some steep slopes, and boulders and rock locally. No major catchment changes.

The station

Station constructed at Yeotown in 1968 as a velocity area station with a natural bed control. In 01/1996 the original station was replaced by Collard Bridge for health and safety reasons. Collard Bridge is a velocity area station with a natural rock bed control, 400m upstream of the original (Yeotown) station. The two records are treated as a continuous record due to the small difference in the catchment area between the two sites. New Flat V (truncated) triangular profile weir operational from 10/2007; velocity-area rating used.

How it measures flow

A bridge 100m upstream is used for measuring high flows. May be bypassed. Bankfull stage at 1.5m. Multiple ratings applied across period of record.

Flow regime

Abstractions a few miles upstream. Wistlandpound Reservoir lies in the north-east of the catchment, but is insignificant compared to the total catchment area and has minimal influence on river flows at the station.
