Velocity area station in a relatively small catchment.

The catchment

Relatively small catchment area consists of Upper Carboniferous (mainly shale) with some areas of Sandstone, alluvium and river deposits. Land use mostly rural/agricultural. No urbanisation in the catchment. Roadford reservoir (downstream) completed in 1989. No major catchment changes.

The station

Station started in 1991 with a low level bed control. Channel approximately 5.2m wide.

How it measures flow

Maximum flows may be considerable over-estimates as out of bank section of rating is simply an extrapolation of the in-bank rating. Access problems at high flows and wading gauging only. Mobile bed. Bankfull at 0.89m. Multiple ratings applied across period of record, further gaugings required to validate ratings but site is remote and regime is flashy so can be hard to gauge.
