The catchment

Large catchment with moorland headwaters on Carboniferous Grit and Limestone. Lower reaches on Sherwood Sandstone and Mercia Mudstone. Valley broadens considerably below Derby with extensive sand and gravel terraces. Range of agricultural and industrial activity.

The station

Crump profile flat V weir is 27m wide, in trapezoidal channel. Very broad floodplain - flows readily and extensively occur out of bank at approx 2.0mASD. 20km downstream of St Marys Bridge; substantial abstractions and returns in between.

How it measures flow

High flows of variable quality as weir drowns; calculated by extrapolation from St Mary's Bridge and gaugings at Draycott. At high flows the gauging site becomes cut off due to floodplain flows and is impossible to gauge except through the use of a boat. Three peak flow ratings applied across period of record. Little evidence to support the top end of the rating.

Can back up from Trent. Abstraction point nearby at Draycott can affect flows (e.g. summer 2018).
