The catchment

Moderately steep catchment having subdued response, draining calcareous slates and thin limestones of the lower Devonian. Land use is low-grade agriculture; pasture, mainly diary and mixed farming. No major changes to catchment.

The station

Crump profile weir, crest length 6m, wing walls 1.9m.

How it measures flow

Flood banks contain flow up to 2.78m; they may be treated as weirs for higher stages. Survey of wrack marks following the 2012 floods show that the weir was drowned at a stage of 1.558 m. Initial analysis suggests this drowning would reduce peak flows by approximately 20%. However insufficient gaugings are available to revise the existing empirical rating. As such the flow data at these levels must be treated with caution. Bypassing is unlikely at stages below structure full, although the valley inundates upstream of the road bridge. Insensitive at low flows. Troubled by accretion downstream of structure filling the fish pool. One peak flow rating applied across period of record. Weir known to be non-modular during 2012 floods, therefore drowning known to affect station at 1.558 m. No rating revision yet made due to a lack of gaugings. Downstream level sensor installed in August 2022 to inform the degree of non-modularity and a high flow rating review.

Flow regime

Natural catchment but mine drainage may affect low flows. Runoff influenced by groundwater abstraction/recharge. Industrial/agricultural abstractions and effluent returns have minimal impact.
