💧 Storm overflows upstream of this gauge

Storm overflows whose water reaches this gauge on the mapped river network, nearest first by distance along the river. The status is each water company's monitor: it says whether an overflow is discharging, not how much or what it contains.

14 storm overflows are traced upstream of this gauge, the nearest 280 m away along the river. 2 report discharging now, 11 report not discharging, and for 1 the monitor is offline or has not reported, so their status is not known.

4 other overflows within 6 km are downstream of this gauge or on another branch of the river network, so they are not listed.

These are the water companies' monitor statuses; a spill does not by itself explain a change in the gauge level. River connections and distances are traced on OS Open Rivers (edition 2026-04), which leaves out many small channels. Explore the sewage map →

Catchment Character

🌊 Fairly flashy Responds fairly quickly to rain, with moderate baseflow between events.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Broad-crested weir oblique to flow gauging a mainly rural catchment.

More detail

The catchment

The north-east and south-west are made up of Millstone Grit and shale, overlain by coal measures. In the centre, the Yoredale series of shale and sandstones are exposed with Upper Triassic Keuper Marls in the west. The area is partly covered with glacial clays, sands and gravels. Alluvium occupies the bottom of the valleys. A mainly rural catchment. No catchment changes known.

The station

Station opened February 1936 on an existing broad-crested mill weir oblique to flow (channel width 17.3m upstream, weir 46.3m across), with relatively narrow crest but a long sloping downstream face at approx 1:5 slope. Station closed in 1953 and re-opened in 1968. Flows available for a similar catchment from 1953 to 1986 at Hulme Walfield downstream (68006).

How it measures flow

Crest is approx 2.9m above downstream channel, which is comparatively narrow, so only extreme events might drown. Channel upstream of weir has high vertical walls, although slight spill over left bank at the weir above approx 1m. Sluice to the old mill (on right bank) reported in November 1971 as having been recently filled in - the offtake to the mill will have reduced flows, but probably had little effect on flood events. One peak flow rating applied across period of record, developed from hydraulic modelling which considered out of bank flow and confirmed by ADCP gaugings.

Flow regime

Bosley reservoir is in the catchment. Several groundwater abstractions.

The flow record

The chart datum was lowered by 1ft from 15/8/1940 to closure on 4/5/1953, and the original datum was used when station reopened in 1968. Stages presented in the peak flow holdings have been set to the original datum. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7).
