Catchment Character

🌊 Groundwater-fed Slow and steady — fed largely by groundwater, so levels change gradually, not in sudden spikes.

Your catchment is all the land that drains rainfall into the river above this gauge. Its character — how steep, wet, wooded, urban or chalky that land is — decides how fast rain here turns into a rising river. A steep, bare or clay catchment is “flashy” (rises and falls quickly, floods easily); a flat, chalk or well-wooded one is slow and steady. The tiles below put numbers to that; the flow-duration curve reads left-to-right from the river’s typical high flows (Q5) down to its low flows (Q95) — a steep curve means a flashy river.

About this gauge

Flat V Crump (with a side weir in 1974-1985) gauging a predominantly rural and predominantly Chalk catchment with significant artificial influences.

More detail

The catchment

Predominantly Chalk covered by Boulder Clay in S part and containing some river terrace deposits. Land use largely rural with limited urbanised development (Newmarket).

The station

Flat V Crump profile weir (Fordham No1 mill main station), 4m broad. From Oct 1974, a subsidiary Crump profile weir (Fordham No2 side stream station), 0.7m broad, measured bypass channel discharge. Flows were combined into single series. Side weir was removed in Dec 1984 and main weir rating adjusted to compensate (flows increased by 2%).

How it measures flow

One rating applied across period of record, valid to modular limit. Flows prior to 1984 were calculated using tables and adding together flow at the main and side weir. Side weir was removed in Dec 1984 and main weir rating adjusted to compensate (flows increased by 2%). Part of the Lodes-Granta groundwater support scheme, operated according to site conditions.

Flow regime

Significant gw abstractions for PWS and surface water abstractions for spray irrigation.

The flow record

Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in August 2021 (WINFAP Files v10).
