The station was established to assess the effect on flow due to the growth of Bracknell, although the structure (previously existing) was not ideal for this.
More detail
The catchment
An impermeable catchment (London Clay). Rural headwaters, including considerable woodland, but major new town development (Bracknell) built upstream since late 1940s. Downstream the land use within the catchment is almost a third urban overall (with a substantial increase over the POR).
The station
Broad-crested weir (13.7m wide) plus adjustable low flow notch (crest 1.22m wide), that was added in 1968, at outfall from an ornamental lake.
How it measures flow
Possibly some flow under main weir and leakage at the notch (adjustable weir). Probably unlikely to drown as there is a large drop over weir. One rating applied across the period of record; tends to underestimate flows in the AMAX range. This was derived using broad-crested weir theory, with flows treated as sum of two broad-crested weirs.
Flow regime
Hydrograph shows mixed rural/urban response - including the effect of balancing ponds. Runoff increased by effluent returns and reduced by industrial/agricultural abstraction. Significant and increasing effluent component during periods of low flow (primarily from Ascot STW - this represents a net import of water).

Early flow data (prior to installation of the low flow notch) was less precise. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2020 (WINFAP Files v9).
