About Windsor
Windsor
Town in Berkshire, England

Windsor is a historic town in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, England. It is home to Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British monarch. The town is located 21.8 miles (35.1 km) west of Charing Cross in central London, 5.8 miles (9.3 km) southeast of Maidenhead, and 15.8 miles (25.4 km) east of the modern county town of Reading. It lies immediately south of the River Thames, which forms its boundary with the smaller and historic town of Eton. The village of Old Windsor, just over 2 miles (3 km) to the south, predates what is now called Windsor by, possibly, 300 years. Until 1974, Windsor was sometimes officially referred to as New Windsor to distinguish the two.

Does Windsor flood?

Ordnance Survey places 258 postcodes in Windsor in the Environment Agency's rivers-and-sea flood-risk dataset (Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea). Each postcode is counted once, under the worst band any of its properties reaches; together they hold 4,459 properties in the EA dataset's likelihood bands.

EA likelihood bandPostcodes (worst band)Properties in the EA datasetof which homes
High19139134
Medium24239215
Low1793,4183,046
Very low36663574
All bands2584,4593,969

This dataset covers flooding from rivers and the sea only — one of five flood sources. Surface water, groundwater, sewers and reservoirs are assessed separately, so a postcode missing from it is not proof that a place cannot flood. The band describes the land around properties (allowing for defences), not any single address and not today's conditions.

The watercourse nearest Windsor

The nearest watercourse on the river map is the River Thames, about 80 m from the middle of Windsor's gauges. It flows on to the sea.

A gauge downstream shows water that has already passed this point; one upstream sees it first. Distances along the river are from the point on the River Thames nearest the middle of Windsor's gauges. From Ordnance Survey’s river map (OS Open Rivers), which leaves out small streams, ditches and culverts, so a nearer one may exist. This describes where water goes on the map; it says nothing about flooding at any address. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights 2026.
