Darwen is a market town and civil parish in the Blackburn with Darwen borough of Lancashire, England. The residents of the town are known as "Darreners". The town lies on the River Darwen, which flows from south to north and is seen in parks in the town centre. The A666 road passes through Darwen towards Blackburn to the north, Bolton to the south and Pendlebury, where it joins the A6, about 18 miles (29 km) north-west of Manchester. The population of Darwen stood at 28,046 in the 2011 census. It comprises four wards and has its own town council.
Ordnance Survey places 76 postcodes in Darwen in the Environment Agency's rivers-and-sea flood-risk dataset (Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea). Each postcode is counted once, under the worst band any of its properties reaches; together they hold 1,014 properties in the EA dataset's likelihood bands.
| EA likelihood band | Postcodes (worst band) | Properties in the EA dataset | of which homes |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | 35 | 376 | 188 |
| Medium | 16 | 249 | 157 |
| Low | 25 | 389 | 172 |
| Very low | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| All bands | 76 | 1,014 | 517 |
This dataset covers flooding from rivers and the sea only — one of five flood sources. Surface water, groundwater, sewers and reservoirs are assessed separately, so a postcode missing from it is not proof that a place cannot flood. The band describes the land around properties (allowing for defences), not any single address and not today's conditions.

The nearest watercourse on the river map is the River Darwen, about 90 m from the middle of Darwen's gauges. It flows into the River Ribble about 28 km downstream.
A gauge downstream shows water that has already passed this point; one upstream sees it first. Distances along the river are from the point on the River Darwen nearest the middle of Darwen's gauges. From Ordnance Survey’s river map (OS Open Rivers), which leaves out small streams, ditches and culverts, so a nearer one may exist. This describes where water goes on the map; it says nothing about flooding at any address. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights 2026.
