What the three levels mean

Flood alert

Flooding is possible. Be prepared. Keep an eye on local river levels and forecasts, and get ready to move valuables and put flood protection in place.

Flood warning

Flooding is expected. Immediate action required. Move family, pets and valuables to safety, turn off gas, electricity and water if it is safe to, and put flood protection in place.

Severe flood warning

Severe flooding. Danger to life. Stay in a safe place with a means of escape, and follow the advice of the emergency services. Call 999 if you are in immediate danger.

Where this comes from. England’s current warnings come from the Environment Agency; Scotland’s come from SEPA Floodline. We check each every 15 minutes. Contains SEPA data © Scottish Environment Protection Agency and database right 2026. Used with permission. The history since 2006 covers Environment Agency warnings in England only. Welsh warnings come from Natural Resources Wales, checked every 15 minutes. Contains Natural Resources Wales information © Natural Resources Wales and Database Right. All rights Reserved. The history is the Environment Agency’s record of every warning raised since 2006, which it publishes each quarter, joined to the warnings we have recorded live since. Each count is one warning or alert raised for one area; a warning that was later updated counts once. When a warning is removed that is not counted as a new warning. An area with no warnings on record can still flood.
