The catchment

River rises on Millstone Grit and traverses Sherwood Sandstone and Mercia Mudstone, although there is extensive coverage by glacial sands and gravels with some peat deposits. Some marshland with complex artificial drainage.

The station

Crump profile weir with vertical wingwalls, 6m wide with (unused) crest tapping. Low cost fish baffles installed on downstream face of weir in July 2015.

How it measures flow

All floods contained and the weir is not known to drown. Channel very prone to weed growth and may suffer from siltation upstream. Theoretical rating applied across period of record confirmed by gaugings to 0.85m.

Flow regime

Substantial groundwater abstraction has indirect effect. Effluent returns in catchment may have substantial effect at lowest flows.
