Model tested trapezoidal flume and flanking broad-crested weirs within a vertical concrete side walls. Originally the site was built in the 1960s.

The catchment

Broad, flat main channel flanked by steeply graded streams. Complex geology; s'sts and shales (Pre-Cambrian to Silurian). Lower reaches entirely covered by Boulder Clay and fluvio-glacial sand and gravel. Moorland and low grade agriculture.

The station

Model tested trapezoidal flume and flanking broad-crested weirs within a vertical concrete side walls, 7.3m apart. Originally the site was built in the 1960s, and although previously there were concerns about potential erosion on site, low flow gaugings confirm there are no issues at site.

How it measures flow

Left bank inundated at high flows, however velocities in general are low on site, therefore extrapolation is considered reasonable. All flows are contained by the downstream road bridge, which is used to gauge high flows. Theoretical rating is applied across the period of record. Rating is thought to be reliable to 1.5mASD, but further gaugings are needed to confirm this.
