The catchment

Permeable catchment draining the southern slopes of the North Yorkshire moors, geology consists of Sandstones, grits and limestone of the Middle Oolites overlain by clay in the lower catchment. Contributing catchment area varies due to Sea Cut diversion. Extensive floodplain upstream of gauge. No known catchment changes.

The station

Full range multipath ultrasonic gauge, installed in 2001 under the A64 road bridge. Flood flows from the upper catchment diverted to the Sea Cut (measured at 27033).

How it measures flow

Ultrasonic gauge in relatively straight approach channel. Transducers mounted on sloping racks up to bankfull with higher paths in vertical racks on bridge piers. Some flow behind piers in flood conditions is allowed for in the gauge calculations. Bankfull stage given is channel bank, but all flows contained by higher embankments set back on floodplain.

Flow regime

Relatively slow response catchment with significant baseflow component. Artificial influences on flow include straightened sections and drainage for agriculture upstream of the Rye confluence. Flood flows from 88.8 sq.km of the Derwent headwaters are diverted (~6% of the catchment) via the Sea Cut (27033) - relatively small impact downstream of Rye confluence.
