The catchment

Flat, rural catchment draining part of Vale of York. Bedrock geology is primarily Sandstones and mudstones with superficial deposits of sands and gravels, moderate to high permeability.

The station

Flat V gauging weir, built 1978, gauging rural catchment close to confluence with the River Ouse. Concrete flat V weir 6m wide with 1:10 side slopes and vertical sheet-piled wing walls. Instrument kiosk on left bank with upstream and downstream level recorders in stilling wells. Eel tiles added to weir face in 2014.

How it measures flow

Weir drowns in high flows due to backwater from the Ouse confluence a short distance downstream, flows above 1.6 m3/s should be discounted. Theoretical modular weir rating supported by check gaugings.

Flow regime

Relatively slow response from a flat, moderately permeable, agricultural catchment. Some artificial influences from agricultural abstraction and sewage treatment works discharges, slight net increase to natural flows.
